World Fisheries Day was created to raise awareness of the impacts of overfishing, habitat destruction and other serious threats to the long-term sustainability of marine ecosystems. Every day, valuable species and habitats that capture and store carbon are being destroyed.

One of the biggest threats to global fisheries are unreported, and unregulated fishing and it's thought that over 90% of global marine fish populations have been fully exploited, overfished or depleted to be point that they might never recover.

The impact of plastics and other waste has also had a devastating effect on aquatic life with research suggesting the over 50% of plastic in the oceans consist of fishing nets! This accumulation of waste caused by industrial fishing has many negative impacts including injury to marine life and the release of microplastics.

It’s more important than ever to make the right choice when it comes to seafood. Aquaculture, like Shellfish farming is playing an important role by providing a sustainable seafood source for millions of people all over the world. Mussels are an excellent choice and are known to be one of the most sustainable farmed proteins on the planet!
